Thomas Briscoe and Sarah Hill Family of Alabama
The ancestors of Thomas Briscoe of Alabama came to America from England certainly before the Declaration of Independence by the British Colonies in 1776 and the American Revolution. Thomas Briscoe is probably a descendant of Dr. John Briscoe who sailed to America with Lord Baltimore when he established the Maryland Colony in 1633. There is an English Coat of Arms for the Briscoe family and a motto in Latin - “Praesto et Persisto” which means “Excellent and Persistent”. The English Briscoes lived in northern England in the County of Cumberland near the Scotland border. The descendants of the Maryland Briscoes migrated first to Virginia and then to Kentucky and Tennessee.
“Thomas Briscoe of Alabama” refers to the Thomas Briscoe who came to Alabama in 1819 and is the ancestor of most if not all of the Briscoe’s in the northern half of Alabama at the beginning of the twenty-first century. He also has descendants living in Missouri, Texas, Florida, and Georgia.
